How to Add & Use Hyperlinks in Microsoft Word (Step-by-Step Guide)

Hyperlinks in Microsoft Word make your documents interactive and professional by allowing readers to click through to websites, email addresses, or other sections of your document.

This guide, part of our Microsoft Word tutorial series, will show you how to insert and test hyperlinks in a Word document—step by step.

If you refer to watch the video of this blog, you can see it below

Step 1: Highlight the Text You Want to Link

  • Open your Word document.
  • Locate the text you want to turn into a hyperlink. Example: In the sentence “The growing incidence of sinkholes in major cities like Manila…”, highlight the word Manila.

Step 2: Insert the Hyperlink

  • With the text highlighted, go to the Insert tab in the Word ribbon.
  • Click on Hyperlink (you can also right-click the text and choose Link or press Ctrl+K).
  • In the dialog box that appears, you’ll see the highlighted text displayed at the top.
  • In the Address field, type or paste the web URL you want to link to (e.g., https://example.com).
  • Click OK.

You’ll notice:

  • The linked text changes color (usually to blue) and becomes underlined.
  • This indicates it is now an active hyperlink.

Step 3: Test the Hyperlink

  • Hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard.
  • While holding Ctrl, click the linked text.
  • Your browser should open and navigate to the web page you specified.

✅ That’s It!

You’ve successfully added and tested a hyperlink in Microsoft Word.

Hyperlinks can be used to:

  • Link to websites
  • Link to email addresses (mailto: links)
  • Link to another section in the same document (using bookmarks)

📌 Bonus Tips

  • To remove a hyperlink, right-click the link and select Remove Hyperlink.
  • You can also edit an existing hyperlink by right-clicking and choosing Edit Hyperlink.

🚀 Final Words

Adding hyperlinks to your Word documents helps you create interactive, useful, and more professional-looking content.
